DO I NEED TO EXPEND MONEY AND ENERGY ON HR POLICIES AND PROCESSES, UNTIL I REACH A SIZEABLE TURNOVER AND EMPLOYEE STRENGTH?
By Naveen Coomar

The best time to set policies and processes is before the team becomes large. It is easier to set a new practice while the team is still young and of few members. The values of the promoters could be reflected and ingrained as a culture. Thereafter new members see the values more than they are told and therefore easier to adapt them. It is like teaching a child a certain way of behavior is easier than asking that change of a grown-up man.

Most start-ups make this mistake that they will invest time and energy on policies and processes ‘later’. This ensures that the policies look a bit tardy and dumped from above. Later in organizational life cycle, every change expected is considered as an impingement and interference.
